Time to Celebrate Together
We drove down to Falmouth, Maine for Thanksgiving with Jake's sister Kate's family, right after the first big snowstorm of the season. We were all very happy (and relieved) to be invited as guests and to get to spend time with extended family. G napped through most of the afternoon (as did I...whoops...but in my defense, nursing a toddler right after eating Thanksgiving would put anyone out). C was delighted to make paper airplanes with their 3 teenage boys, and Geoff enjoyed catching up with the men, one of whom was another cell biologist who used to teach at Brown. Kate was a very gracious host. Everything smelled delicious, and I instantly loved her home as soon as we walked in.
But this should be no surprise, because Kate (who is in the background of the dark image with the long line of pies she made) just happens to be Kate Lowry of Kate Lowry Designs, and you can see her interior design work on HGTV's episode of "Vacation Home for Free," Maine Edition, airing soon! She is a genius at design and staging homes with things you already have. You can see her work at katelowrydesigns.com
But just for today, we all put work aside and enjoyed each other’s company along with perfect turkey, extraordinary cranberry sauce, and as they say down South, “All the Fixins,” including some Southern dishes somebody brought. (Wink wink.)
As we were leaving, each child went around to each of the (14? ish?) people there and said goodbye to them by name. But when we got to Gretchen, G refused to say her name.
"Can you say Gretchen?" [shakes her little head] "Say, 'Bye bye, Gretchen!'" [shakes her head] "Bye bye!" says Gretchen. [G waves. Everybody laughs.]
But in the car for the next week, all G would say about Thanksgiving was, "Crotchen was there!"
