Their First Fall as Four
Heather, Matt, Henry, and Teo are adjusting to life as a family of 4. I'm so honored I got to document this time in their lives. They chose a Family Film Story (and it takes me a few weeks longer to complete videos, so stay tuned), I snap a few still shots during filming of every project. And although I haven't advertised it before, I always take one formal/camera-aware portrait of the family before I leave if the family desires. Because sometimes, it's just really nice to make sure we have one photo where you can see everyone's face, right?)
This particular morning (quite early! 8 am!), their house was full of excitement for trains and carving pumpkins and jumping in the leaves. We ended with that good ol' standby, vintage Richard Scarry. I love all the details in their home, including the artwork in Henry's room, which used to belong to Heather when she was little.
Teo is just 3 months old, and slept through most of our session. But when he was awake, he was such a happy baby! He even let me snuggle him! Henry is very affectionate, including to his new baby brother. I had a great time playing with him when he wasn't playing happily with Matt.
But as I reflect on my time with this family, what stands out to me is not only their joy, but that their love was also expressed through respect. I really enjoyed watching Matt and Henry work on the pumpkin together. Matt has such a respectful and patient way of communicating with Henry.
It was such a delightful way to start the day, and also the first time I ever actually teared up while filming. It was toward the end when Matt was passing Teo back to Heather...I am ridiculous, I know. It's just an everyday thing, handing a baby to your wife...but the sound of Teo's little fuss, the gentle way they handled him...the magic is in the everyday, whether we realize it or not. Who we are, who we're becoming, first as 1, then as couples, then 3...or 4. Day by day, year by year, pumpkin by pumpkin.
