Beach on a School Day
A week or so after everyone had settled down into their school routines, summer quieted in Maine. Then one day in September, a gift. An 85 degree weekday. I packed up the children bright and early, we dropped Geoff off to teach at Colby, and away we went to a deserted Popham Beach. My first time there, I was astonished at how wide and open it was. I'd never seen a beach with such a vast expanse of sand. There was a lovely, large, warm tide pool reflecting the sky. We played there endlessly before crossing the sand, building a teepee out of found driftwood and encountering the ocean. We ended with a picnic and long naps on the car ride home. What a lark!
