Up To Camp, Day 2
Despite all the family around, I somehow ended up spending the day alone with the children. Some were going sailing, some were going golfing. And no one was going to be back before naptime, so I took the kids to the beach park. C has been growing more independent this summer, keeping more occupied and beginning to play off on his own, not necessarily right up under me. This allows me to follow G around more, which is still pretty necessary as she's quite the daredevil. She recently leapt off the top of 5 concrete steps when I wasn't even ready to catch her. She just yelled, "WHEEE!" as my only warning! I dropped everything in my arms in a flash and caught her, upside down, with her head just an inch from the pavement. We played in the sand, in the water, on the playground, and walked out on docks. G was really confused as to why her feet left dark marks, so she sat down and inspected her feet and tried to figure it out!
Afterwards, we went to the only grocery store in town to gather all the supplies to make ice cream. I found that White Mountain ice cream churn in the attic space by where the kids were sleeping, and it probably hadn't been used in 20 years.
And it was a fair amount of work. But everyone helped. And everyone cranked. And the kids got bored with it and ran around. (G was fascinated with "coits" which is basically this game set up in the side of the yard where you throw big heavy washers into an in-the-ground bucket. It's awesome. Especially with wine.)
But after what seemed like an eternity (really only about 20 minutes) we finally made ice cream happen again. And it was delicious! Oreo. I recommend it.
